Rainy Day Gardening

Other than building the usual couch forts, sheet tents, and setting up our own pretend living room campgrounds, another good rainy day activity is planting seeds and creating garden-themed crafts and decorations in preparation for the upcoming gardening season. Each rain storm reminds us of how important water is, as a never-ending cycle that nourishes everything in life to grow and continue to thrive.

Seeded Paper Bookmarks - reusable paper bookmarks that are not only decorative, but also can be planted into the ground to sprout beautiful plants and flowers.

Glass and Plastic Bottle Terrariums - a fun hands-on project for creating your own little mini ecosystem (either in plastic bottles with simple vines and seedlings for the kids, or you can create more complicated plant placements in glass jars for a rainy day craft of your own).

Rock Crafts - tons of crafts created with pebbles and paint. These are great indoor projects, like rock animals for use as displays in your garden, rock magnets, and useful rainy day activities such as rock dominoes!

A very inspirational and thought-provoking book for all ages, the Curious Garden is a magical story about the efforts of a little boy who changed an entire city with his plan for gardening. A curious garden, that took on a mind of its own, and transpired into many gardens.

Our favorite part of the book quotes, "The garden was especially curious about old, forgotten things." Where something old once becomes new again, this is a lesson that will easily be passed down to my children through the various mixed use of arts, media, and collectibles we recreate in our own home. :-)
